Gozo Yoshimasu
Born in Tokyo in 1939.
He published his first poetry collection Departure (出発) in 1964. In 1970, he was awarded the Takami Jun Prize for his poetry collection Golden Hymns (黄金詩篇). Later, in 1984, he received the 2nd Contemporary Poetry Hanatsubaki Prize for Osiris, Stone God (オシリス、石ノ神). In 1990, his collection Spiral Song (螺旋歌) won the 5th Poetry Literature Museum Prize.
In 1998, Yoshimasu was honored with the 49th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for Arts Promotion for “Snow Island” or “Emily’s Ghost” (「雪の島」あるいは「エミリーの幽霊」). In 2003, he received the Medal with Purple Ribbon. His photography book Omote-gami (表紙) earned him the Mainichi Art Award in 2009.
In 2013, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese Government, and received the Citizen’s Honor Award from Fussa City.
In 2015, Yoshimasu was inducted as a member of the Japan Art Academy and appointed chairman of the Mita Literary Society.

Gozo Yoshimasu is a leading figure in Japanese contemporary literature and art. Beginning his poetry career in the 1960s as a student of Japanese literature at Keio University, he has devoted over 50 years to poetry. His creative work extends beyond poetry to include photography, video, and performance art.
He has won numerous prestigious awards, including the Takami Jun Prize, the Rekitei Prize, the Purple Ribbon Medal, and the Mainichi Art Award. He has taught at universities worldwide, including the University of Southern California, University of Lyon, and Waseda University.
Currently, he focuses on producing gozoCiné video works and publishing books.
