森 眞吾(1937-)
Singo MORI
Shingo Mori
Born in 1937 in Handa City, Aichi Prefecture.
In 1958, while attending Aichi University of Education (formerly Aichi Gakugei University), he was first selected for the Kodo Exhibition. Since then, he established his reputation at a young age mainly through exhibitions with the Kodo Art Association.
In 1964, he exhibited works at the 6th Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition and received the Honorable Mention at the Shell Art Award Exhibition for his pieces Monastery and King.
In 1965, his "Mercenary Series" won the Kodo Art Award at the Kodo Art Association Exhibition, and he was invited to become a member of the association.
In 1969, he resigned from the association and subsequently continued active creation with works such as the "Kao Series," pen drawings, and other drawings.
From the 1970s onward, he exhibited frequently at galleries such as Gallery Ueda (Tokyo), Nagoya Gallery (Nagoya), and Gallery Humanité (Nagoya).
He mentions artists with whom he closely interacted, especially Junkichi Mukai from his Kodo Association days, as well as Yahei Asano in Nagoya and Tatsuki Nambata in Tokyo. He gained nationwide popularity during the 1980s and 1990s.
In 2014, the Tatsuji Fujii Contemporary Art Museum in Hekinan City held a solo exhibition titled Shingo Mori Exhibition – Living in the Estuary.
In 2016, at the age of 79, his solo exhibition Kamaitachi at SHUMOKU GALLERY showcased his freely expressive flat-plane works that seemed to slice through space, revealing an energetic and dynamic realm.
Mori’s position as an early pioneer of abstract postwar art in the Chubu region is invaluable. His evolution through the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 2000s remains significant as an ongoing advancement of contemporary art expression.
