池田巖(1940-)

Iwao IKEDA

Born in Tokyo in 1940.

Iwao Ikeda, eldest son of the second-generation Hyōa Ikeda, began learning bamboo craft from his father at a young age. He was also exposed to the world of tea ceremony and developed a deep appreciation for classical arts. After entering Tokyo University of the Arts, he studied under lacquer artist Gonroku Matsuda and created tea utensils using lacquer in accordance with classical traditions.

In 1986, Ikeda seemed to find his true self and broke free from the tea ceremony tradition. He began producing simple yet tension-filled tea utensils and flower vases that brought out the charm of materials such as bamboo and lacquer. From around 2005, under the theme "The life of bamboo, the spirit of lacquer," he started creating works made of lacquered bamboo that had been hammered, split, and torn—works without functional use.

In 2008, he held a large-scale solo exhibition at the Kikuchi Kan Jitsumi Memorial Chi Art Museum, drawing significant attention. More recently, he has actively exhibited overseas in cities such as Berlin and New York, further expanding his international presence.
