SHUMOKU GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition by photographer Seiji Kumagai.

Active mainly in portrait photography for magazines and photo books, Kumagai has recently gained considerable attention. In collaboration with photographer Yosinori Toyama, he released the photo book Time for time / Time after time earlier this year. This work features photographs of back alleys taken with expired 8×10 inch Polaroid film, exploring the theme “Time passing / Time for time.”

The exhibition will showcase original Polaroid works from this series, alongside displays and sales of photo books published by the two artists. In addition, representative images by Seiji Kumagai centered on the theme of “blue” will also be exhibited. We warmly invite you to enjoy the show.

Artist Profiles

  • Seiji Kumagai
    Born in 1966 in Hakodate, Hokkaido.
    Winner of the 10th New Cosmos of Photography Outstanding Award (selected by Fumio Nanjo) and the annual Grand Prix at the 3rd New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition in 1994. Has published many photo books including Morito de Janeiro and BRIGHT MOMENTS. Active mainly in portrait photography for various magazines.

  • Yosinori Toyama
    Born in 1954 in Ibaraki Prefecture.
    A freelance photographer who has held numerous exhibitions focusing on nature and history. His works have appeared in publications such as Bessatsu Takarajima (Takarajima-sha) and Inaka Kurashi no Hon (Takarajima-sha).

At this event, participants will view original 8×10 Polaroid film plates and hear behind-the-scenes stories of their creation. Each participant will be photographed on the final 8×10 Polaroid film, and the artist will provide copies of the photos as a gift.
