Kuniaki YAMAMURA Solo Exhibition
SHUMOKU GALLERY is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of Kuniaki Yamamura (b. 1942), following his successful show last year.
Born in Nagoya in 1942, Yamamura graduated from the art department of Aichi Prefectural Asahigaoka High School and went on to study oil painting at Musashino Art University, graduating in 1966. During his university years, he frequently visited cutting-edge galleries such as Minami Gallery and Tokyo Gallery, which introduced contemporary art to Japan, and he was deeply influenced by leading figures in American contemporary art.
At the same time, Yamamura was immersed in the avant-garde art movements happening in Tokyo during the 1960s. After graduating, he returned to Nagoya, where he presented his unique free-style paintings and abstract drawings at galleries such as Sakura Gallery (Nagoya) and Shirota Gallery (Tokyo), earning critical acclaim.
Consistently creating bright, geometric works throughout his career, Yamamura presented a retrospective of his artistic journey from his university days in 1965 to the present at his solo exhibition at SHUMOKU GALLERY last year.
This new exhibition, held approximately one year later, will feature about 20 works, including previously unexhibited pieces from the 1960s to the 1980s and new works created over the past year, which continue to evolve with greater brightness and depth.
We hope this exhibition provides an opportunity to engage with the world of Yamamura’s primal creative impulses and discover new dimensions of his art, which has consistently maintained a high level of quality with its uniquely Eastern, pop-inspired imagery since his early days.
