Shusaku Arakawa Exhibition
CURRENT EXHIBITION
August 10 (Wed) – September 10 (Sat), 2016

Shusaku Arakawa (1936–2010), born in Higashi-ku, Nagoya City, graduated from Aichi Prefectural Asahigaoka High School’s Art Department and later dropped out of Musashino Art School. After working in Japan, he moved to the United States in 1961.

Starting around 1962, he began collaborating with Madeline Gins (1941–2014). In 1970, he presented The Mechanism of Meaning at the Venice Biennale, becoming a leading figure in late 20th-century art, widely recognized in Europe and the Americas. He also made significant contributions to architecture, notably with the Reversible Destiny Lofts in Japan and Yoro Park in Gifu Prefecture (1995), which gained particular renown in the Tokai region.

This exhibition features a broad selection of Arakawa’s work on flat surfaces, from oil paintings created in his teenage years, through his early works after moving to New York, to the prints he actively produced in the 1970s.

Additionally, the show includes the complete collection of Correspondences from Shusaku Arakawa, which will appear in the forthcoming essay collection by Shunkichi Baba titled Beyond Meaning: Staying Close to Shusaku Arakawa.

We warmly invite you to enjoy the exhibition.
