KO KATO uncertain
December 9 (Sat) – December 24 (Sun), 2017
Opening Reception:
December 9, 5:00 PM
SHUMOKU GALLERY is pleased to present a solo exhibition of ceramic artist Ko Kato (b. 1968).
Born as the eldest son of a family that has maintained a kiln for three generations in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture—a region renowned for its ceramics—Kato grew up familiar with clay from an early age. His first solo exhibition as a ceramic artist was held in 2003 at the age of 35 (rail / Nagoya). Since then, he has held several solo exhibitions annually, mainly at galleries in the Tokai region.
Having studied graphic design at Nagoya Zokei Junior College of Art & Design, Kato brings a contemporary sensibility to his work while also showing a deep interest in ancient pottery and antique tools. His tableware and tea utensils are characterized by delicate and meticulous coloring and form. These works carry elements of the avant-garde while embodying a timeless beauty that resonates with the aesthetics of antiquity.
In this exhibition, Kato showcases a series of porcelain pieces he has recently been developing, formed to be as thin as paper. Although made as functional vessels, some of these works develop cracks or holes during the forming or firing process, rendering them unusable. Their lightweight, fragile presence emphasizes a modern sensibility while also conveying a quiet, refined beauty.
In addition to approximately 30 sculptural and flat works from this series, the exhibition will also feature tableware and sake vessels.
We warmly invite you to view this unique body of work.
