Nippon Modern Art vol.3 1950-1959Exhibition Dates: January 20 (Sat) – January 27 (Sat), 2018
Open every day during the exhibition
At SHUMOKU GALLERY, we are pleased to present an exhibition showcasing Japanese paintings from the 1950s.
The show features artists such as Iwami Furusawa, known for his surrealist-inspired style active since before World War II; Toshinobu Onosato, who explored constructivist painting during the wartime period; Kazu Wakita, who studied in Berlin in the 1920s; Yasuo Kazuki, later known for his Siberia Series; and Soshichi Takama, a solitary artist dedicated to abstraction through his public career.
The exhibition also highlights artists who traveled abroad shortly after the war. During the surge of Abstract Expressionism in Japan known as the “Informel whirlwind” of 1956, Japanese artists such as HIsao Domoto, Kumi Sugai, and Kei Sato gained acclaim in Europe. We will present early works created during their time overseas. Also included are works by Genichiro Inokuma from both before and after his move to New York, as well as abstract paintings based on silkscreen techniques by Ryonosuke Fukui, who was among the first to receive recognition in New York for such works.
In addition, the ground floor gallery will feature the latest work by Kuniaki Yamamura, titled Work2017-12.
We warmly invite you to view this rich and historical exhibition.
