DAIDO MORIYAMA

November 25 – December 26, 2015

Daido Moriyama Autograph Session:
December 23, 2015 (Wed) from 15:00

SHUMOKU GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition by Daido Moriyama (b. 1938).

This exhibition will feature previously unpublished works taken between 1998 and 1999, in which Moriyama photographed the backstreets of Tokyo using monochrome Polaroid film.

Unlike conventional photography, Polaroid film instantly develops the image on-site, capturing the moment’s sensations directly onto the print. The physical prints then naturally undergo aging over time. Regarding these works, Moriyama has remarked:
"As I look at each Polaroid one by one, the places where I took them slowly come back to me—like peering into a dream I once had."

Approximately 50 Polaroid works will be on display, along with around 10 additional key images that represent Moriyama’s iconic vision, offering insight into a part of his extensive artistic practice.

We warmly invite you to visit and experience the exhibition.

Daido Moriyama
Born 1938, Osaka

After working as an assistant to photographers Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe, Moriyama began his career as a freelance photographer in 1964. He continued to present his works in photography magazines and, in 1967, won the New Artist Award from the Japan Photo Critics Association for his series Nippon Gekijō (Japan: A Photo Theater).

From 1968 to 1970, he was a member of the independent photography magazine Provoke, where his high-contrast and coarse-grain imagery earned critical acclaim.

In 2003, he held a solo exhibition titled DAIDO MORIYAMA at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris. In 2012, he became the first Japanese recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 28th Infinity Awards organized by the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York.

That same year, the Tate Modern in London hosted the groundbreaking exhibition William Klein + Daido Moriyama, bringing him global recognition.
